The State Security Court (SSC) on Wednesday sentenced 6 persons, including a fugitive, to death for brutally assaulting a 16-year-old boy in Zarqa in October last year, gouging one of his eyes and chopping off his forearms.
The court also handed down a 15-year prison sentence to one of the defendants, while another received a 10-year prison sentence. Two others were sentenced to one-year prison term.
The SSC found another 7 defendants not guilty of any charges and acquitted them after a 5-month trial, during which the court heard from about 50 public prosecution and defense witnesses.
The court said that those convicted committed acts that constitute a disdain for the human soul and its sanctity and endangered and threatened the security, stability and safety of society.
The convicts violated public order, its constants and prevailing pillars, sowed fear among people, endangered the lives of people and provoked chaos, the court indicated in its ruling.
The indictment included serious charges, particularly terrorism and spreading fear among the public, gang formation, rape, kidnapping, causing a permanent disability, possessing a firearm without license, resisting security forces and attempted murder.
The gruesome and unprecedented attack left the nation in shock for its brutality and sparked wide public uproar. The assault took place in the Hashemeih district of the eastern Zarqa governorate when a group of persons kidnapped the boy from the street and took him to an open area and committed their attack.
